Huatulco General Information

Bahias De Huatulco is a unique tourism development based on eco-tourism The name Huatulco comes from the Mixtecan word meaning "where they worship the wood". It is located along the coast of Oaxaca, at the end of the Southern Sierra Madre mountains. It stretches 22 miles along the Pacific Ocean between the mouths of the Coyula and the Copalita River. You will find 9 bays with 36 beaches within Huatulco National Park. Mountains, valleys, and slopes form the Huatulco Bay area topography. The Coyula, San Agustin and Copalita Rivers give a very special touch to the magnificent landscape as well as irrigate the land formations. |

One of the many advantages of Huatulco is the climate. It is warm and semi-humid, with a year round average temperature of 82 degrees. Winter temperatures are never below 60 degrees and the late spring and summers maximum temperature is 100 degrees. The two coolest months are Dec. & Jan.with the two hottest being April & May. Huatulco has an average of 40 rainy days a year. This insures visitors will be able to spend their vacation enjoying the sunshine and warm weather The year is divided into two seasons, the wet season and the dry season. The rains start around the middle of May and stop by the end of September. It is green and plush during this time. It rains an average of 8 - 10 days out of the month. Due to the mixed deciduous forest Huatulco is green six months and dry six months. During the dry season it becomes dry and brown, however, the beauty is still there. You will find many flowering trees and cactus standing out on the hillsides that were hidden behind the green vines earlier. The Huatulco area vegetation is exuberant. There are many species of trees that include plantations of bananas and papaya, and coconuts. The jungle covered hillsides gently slop off into the beautiful seashore. The animal life is typical of subtropical zones. Armadillos, jaguar, squirrel, fox, and white-tail deer can be found. There are a great variety of reptiles including the black and green iguana and several species of turtles. There are 227 registered bird species from which 11 are endemic of this area. Huatulco is rich in sea life with many species of fish, oysters, lobster, clams, shrimp, and snails. The black and white coral off the shores is home to many species of water life.

There is a new first class bus station serving Huatulco. Bus service to Mexico City travels through Acapulco or Oaxaca City. Either route is about 14 hours. The bus ride through Oaxaca is very beautiful However, it is a very windy mountain road. You may want to take along your Dramamine for car sickness. Christmas and Easter is the only time you can expect waits due to lack of available seats. |

Fine food is a tradition among the Oaxacans. Dishes like mole, tlayudas,
tasajo and quisillo must be enjoyed so you can take back a taste of Huatulco's
flavor with you. If you are fond of seafood, Huatulco is the right place
to enjoy delicious shrimp, lobster, squid and many other varieties of
seafood. |

Save The Turtles Are you interested in being a volunteer? If you are, come assist with the "Save the Turtles" project, along the beautiful southern Pacific coast of Mexico? Get involved and visit the beautiful Bays of Huatulco, Oaxaca. Available from June through February while the turtles are coming to shore to lay their eggs. This takes a 21 day commitment to the project and a sign up fee. |
