Huatulco General Information

Bahias De Huatulco is a unique tourism development based on eco-tourism The name Huatulco comes from the Mixtecan word meaning "where they worship the wood". It is located along the coast of Oaxaca, at the end of the Southern Sierra Madre mountains. It stretches 22 miles along the Pacific Ocean between the mouths of the Coyula and the Copalita River. You will find 9 bays with 36 beaches within Huatulco National Park. Mountains, valleys, and slopes form the Huatulco Bay area topography. The Coyula, San Agustin and Copalita Rivers give a very special touch to the magnificent landscape as well as irrigate the land formations.

 

CLIMATE

One of the many advantages of Huatulco is the climate. It is warm and semi-humid, with a year round average temperature of 82 degrees. Winter temperatures are never below 60 degrees and the late spring and summers maximum temperature is 100 degrees. The two coolest months are Dec. & Jan.with the two hottest being April & May. Huatulco has an average of 40 rainy days a year. This insures visitors will be able to spend their vacation enjoying the sunshine and warm weather The year is divided into two seasons, the wet season and the dry season. The rains start around the middle of May and stop by the end of September. It is green and plush during this time. It rains an average of 8 - 10 days out of the month. Due to the mixed deciduous forest Huatulco is green six months and dry six months. During the dry season it becomes dry and brown, however, the beauty is still there. You will find many flowering trees and cactus standing out on the hillsides that were hidden behind the green vines earlier.

The Huatulco area vegetation is exuberant. There are many species of trees that include plantations of bananas and papaya, and coconuts. The jungle covered hillsides gently slop off into the beautiful seashore.

The animal life is typical of subtropical zones. Armadillos, jaguar, squirrel, fox, and white-tail deer can be found. There are a great variety of reptiles including the black and green iguana and several species of turtles. There are 227 registered bird species from which 11 are endemic of this area. Huatulco is rich in sea life with many species of fish, oysters, lobster, clams, shrimp, and snails. The black and white coral off the shores is home to many species of water life.

 

 
 
   

Huatulco Travel Information

Bahias de Huatulco has a beautiful International Airport about 30 minutes from the hotel areas.

There is a new first class bus station serving Huatulco. Bus service to Mexico City travels through Acapulco or Oaxaca City. Either route is about 14 hours. The bus ride through Oaxaca is very beautiful However, it is a very windy mountain road. You may want to take along your Dramamine for car sickness. Christmas and Easter is the only time you can expect waits due to lack of available seats.

 

FOOD AND CRUSINE

Fine food is a tradition among the Oaxacans. Dishes like mole, tlayudas, tasajo and quisillo must be enjoyed so you can take back a taste of Huatulco's flavor with you. If you are fond of seafood, Huatulco is the right place to enjoy delicious shrimp, lobster, squid and many other varieties of seafood.

BOAT TOURS OF THE HUATULCO BAYS

Get to see the unsurpassing beauty of beaches, bay parks, and rock formations with one of the boat tours. See such rock formations as the stone face, the waterspout, along with many beautiful beaches. You have access to many of these bays by boat only. You can enjoy the bays at your leisure by hiring a small boat and guide or enjoy the party atmosphere of the catamarans where you can see the coral reefs and have music, games and seafood.

TOUR OF SANTA MARIA HUATULCO

Santa Maria Huatulco is only a thirty-minute ride away from Bahias de Huatulco. It is a typical colonial style village with cobble stone streets and a main plaza surrounded by the church La Conception, the municipal building, the cemetery, and the market.

 

DAY TOUR OF A COFFEE PLANTATION

Take an all day tour of one of the coffee plantations in the mountains of the Sierra Madre del Sur. This is something special due to direct contact with nature. You will discover the many different ecosystems from the seaside to the high mountain areas of the plantations. There w ill be an opportunity to taste some of the many flavors of coffee, cocoa, and other foods.

TOUR OF FISHING VILLAGES

There are many small villages and beaches that one can get away and visit. You will find at the foot of the mountain, leading down to the ocean, the small simple fishing village of Puerto Angel. Just down the road, is Zipolite a colony of rustic hammock and bamboo beach-front cabanas popular with the budget minded seekers? Puerto Escondido another fishing village/resort attracts travelers from all over the world. I t is also home of international surfing contests in August and November at the famous Zicatela beach

 

TOUR OF OAXACA CITY

For the traveler who has more time, a trip to the colonial city of Oaxaca is a must. The city with a population of 214,000 is a rare beauty nicknamed "City of Jade". It is a relatively affluent and cosmopolitan city with museums, churches, outstanding archaeological sites, and villages where you can go to buy crafts direct from the artisan.

You can travel to Oaxaca by either air or ground travel. If you go by ground spend the night at the beautiful village of San Jose del Pacifico found in the high chilly humid mountains. The beautiful mountain panoramas will take your breath away

SNORKELING AND DIVING

The beauty of the Pacific Ocean has turned this area into a site of excellent snorkeling and diving. Since there are nine bays to choose from, the brilliant colors of the coral shaped designs are obvious subjects to be photographed. Diving at Maguey Bay or at the astonishing volcanic rock bottom of Montosa Island in front of Tangolunda Bay represents some of the different types of surroundings. Each immersion is unique and intriguing whether day or night diving or a first snorkeling experiences.

 

WATER ACTIVITIES

For Adventuresome souls there is river rafting and kayaking on the beautiful rivers. You adventure through the lush beauty of the mountain landscape on the two main rivers of this region. You may choose from a variety of descents from class I to IV on rafts, kayaks. This combines excitement, water, and overwhelming panoramic views

If you are on a kayak ride the waves at La Bocana (the mouth) as the river dumps into the ocean. Then head out to sea to explore the open ocean or the coastline. If you are lucky you may kayak along side dolphins or whales as they make there migratory journey.

   

DEEP SEA FISHING

The ocean waters are excellent for deep-sea fishing where your best fishing dreams can come true by catching a sailfish, tuna or some other type of fish.

 
 

ON WHEELS

Excitement and fun on wheels offers tours through the jungle on 4-wheel motorcycles. Visit virgin beaches where you can swim and play on the sand dunes.

Are you ready for a bicycle ride through the jungle? This is an unforgettable way to see the flora and fauna of the area. You can also take a tour of the town of La Crucecita and Santa Cruz Bay where you will see points of interest such as the church, art, craft markets and an up close look of the people and their culture.

Excitement and fun on wheels offers tours through the jungle on 4-wheel motorcycles. Visit virgin beaches where you can swim and play on the sand dunes.

If you were not quite up to bicycling maybe you would like to take a self-guided tour on the small motor scooters.

 
   
 

HORSEBACK RIDING

Feel free to explore places you can not reach by car. Go across the tropical jungle to Rio Copalita where you can gallop on horse back along the seaside and swim in the Pacific Oceans crystalline waters.

 

HIKING/BIRD WATCHING

There are many hiking opportunities. Huatulco's National Park offers you a great variety of flora and fauna to observe. How about getting up early to watch one of the most breathtaking sunrises ever at the Punta Celeste archeological site. You can then hike to the mouth of the Rio Copalita river where it flows into the ocean. There you can watch the many different species of migratory birds and wildlife. You can also hike along The Coyote Beach on the San Agustin Bay, to catch an unbelievable sunset? You can rockclimb over nearby rocks and waterfalls and enjoy the excitement and thrill. There are three locations where you can experience rock repelling. You can see Punta Celest, Piedra de Morros and the Copalitilla waterfalls.

18 HOLE GOLF COURSE

If you want to relax, visit the majestic 18-hole golf course located in the midst of a natural setting with lakes, and sand traps. This championship class golf course offers you both challenge and beauty. The last hole gives you a panoramic view of Tangolunda Bay which makes this course one of the best in Mexico.

 

DISCOS AND NIGHT LIFE

For night fun try the hotel discotheques or check out the town where you will find a variety of places to suit everyone's taste. You can always find your way back to the beautiful Santa Cruz Bay where there are more nightclubs and discos. If discos aren't your thing, stop at a restaurant and discover some of Huatulco's famous Mexican food. Maybe you would like to experience the local dances of the state of Oaxaca. There are performances several times a week at the park or different restaurants. You may just want to relax on one of the benches in the beautiful green park in the center of La Crucecita

Save The Turtles

Are you interested in being a volunteer? If you are, come assist with the "Save the Turtles" project, along the beautiful southern Pacific coast of Mexico? Get involved and visit the beautiful Bays of Huatulco, Oaxaca. Available from June through February while the turtles are coming to shore to lay their eggs. This takes a 21 day commitment to the project and a sign up fee.

Art Tours

The local community of artists living in Huatulco has found the wonders of the Bahias De Huatulco perfect for expressing their autistic talents. The scenic seashores, mountains, parks, churches and nearby villages are perfect to capture on canvas or in photographs.

Culture/Religion Tours

Join the villages during special celebrations such as Saints Days, the Guelagetza, or Dia de Muerte. There are 7 indigenous regions with their special cultures, languages, and customs. Design a tour around one of these celebrations or around your time schedule.

 

 

Coffee Plantation Tours

Spend a few nights on the family owned coffee plantation La Mamay. Learn about their Mexican and German heritage and how they were involved with the beginning Mexican coffee industry.
